10 Rooms to Install Cabinets in Your Home Beyond the Kitchen
Of course you can install cabinets in the kitchen but they can be useful in many rooms of your home. There are lots of rooms in your home and they all need storage! Let’s explore all the other areas of your home to install cabinets, outside of the kitchen.
1. The Laundry Room
Whether your laundry room is small or large, storage space is a must. A well organized laundry room can be achieved by installing cabinets, shelving, or both. Features that are popular in kitchen cabinets like a carousel, pull-out cabinets, and slide-out worktops can be very useful in the laundry room.
If your laundry room is small install cabinets above your washer and dryer to keep laundry and cleaning supplies accessible or provide space for hanging laundry. Open or floating shelves are also good options for tight spaces.
If you have a larger laundry room consider installing cabinets with countertop folding space, and incorporating a utility sink, or dedicated home workspace.
2. Dining Room or Bar Area
Consider installing shallow cabinetry in your dining room to create a built in buffet or storage for occasional serving supplies. Include some open shelving to display your glassware or serving collection.
Create an entertaining dream space, a separate bar or coffee bar. By installing cabinetry in your bar area you not only create more storage, but you can ensure that guests have easy access to drinks and you can separate it from the kitchen. This space can double as extra prep or platter space for larger dinner parties. A mix of open and closed (or locked) storage keeps the area tidy.
In the photo to the right, we designed this kitchen to extend into a small breakfast dining area. The dining space was small and rarely used so we transformed this space into a bar and entertaining area adjacent to the game room. The combination of open and closed cabinetry creates a clean and modern look. We built custom wine storage racks below the countertop to showcase the homeowners wine collection.
3. Family Room or Game Room
In a playroom, kitchen cabinets can organize toys, crafts, and gadgets. Storage organizers can separate types of toys while keeping them accessible for children. Cabinets with doors can help maintain a clean and organized appearance.

Semi-custom cabinetry can enhance organization in any room of your home. It can add style and functionality to your closet, pantry laundry room, bathroom, craft room, garage, mud room, playroom, basement, bedrooms, living room, home office, and even your entry or hallway!
4. Living Room
Organize your living room with cabinets for an entertainment center, bookshelves, video game storage and more. Tall cabinets can house games or electronics. while drawers can store blankets and pillows. Use open cabinetry or floating shelves to display books, photos, and collectibles. Upper cabinets can be mounted as floating cabinets as shown in the photo to the left.
5. Bathrooms
Cabinets in the bathroom efficiently utilize space and keep toiletries, towels, and cleaning supplies organized. Roll-out organizers, pullout cabinets, and slide-out shelving improve storage solutions in the bathroom. Upgrading a vanity with kitchen cabinets can also enhance the bathroom’s style.
6. Closets
Walk-in closets can be organized with freestanding wardrobes or base cabinetry to create custom built-in storage. Adjustable shelving, multi level hanging bars, shoe racks, and cabinets with doors can maximize your space for clothes, shoes, and accessories. Freestanding base cabinets with countertops can create beautiful custom dressers and chests.
7. Mudroom, Entry, or Hallway
Hallways can use closet storage systems for shoes, coats, or other miscellaneous household items. Tall cabinets can be used to store coats, hats, and other items. Base cabinets can be used to create bench seating with drawers or open shelves for shoes.

8. Garage & Workshop
Kitchen cabinets and countertops work well in the garage to store gardening supplies, seasonal outdoor items, sports gear, and yard equipment. In the workshop they can be used to store tools and materials.
9. Basement
Cabinets can transform your basement into a living and entertainment center, workout area, family room, or home office. Pullout cabinets or drawer organizers help keep video games, equipment, or craft items organized.
Kitchen cabinets provide drawers and shelves for storing supply bins and crafting tools while providing a countertop workspace. Adding a stand alone work station countertop for a small crafting and hobby table. Use bins and drawer dividers to sort small items.
In this photo of a daylight basement remodel, the owner wanted to use the space as a clay studio. We installed a small bank of cabinets with lots of drawers for storing tools and providing countertop work space. The studio includes a kiln with ventilation and a utility sink for cleaning up.
10. Home Office
Cabinets can make your home office more efficient. Adding a countertop extends workspace, while pullout cabinets and drawer accessories can store files, cables, electronics, and books.
